Rajini's Kuselan in deep trouble

The Kannada organisations have decided to continue their protest agitation to block the release of Superstar Rajinikanth's new film Kuselan which is slated for release on August 1 in several centres of the state. Rajinikanth's letter to the president of the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce indicating that he is not in the habit of hurting feelings of the people and the film chamber should co-operate for the release of his film Kuselan has not convinced the leaders of the pro Kannada organisations.

Terming Rajini's letter as style king's new stunt, former legislators Vatal Nagaraj and Prabhakar Reddy alleged that the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce has acted as brokers to the film's producers and distributors by allowing the free passage of the film's release. "This is not an apology letter. Its just an eye wash attempt by Rajinikanth to see that his film gets released without any problem. The fact is that Rajinikanth who was born and brought up in Karnataka has acted against the interests of the people of the state by stating that Tamil Nadu has the right to take up Hogenakal project. He has spoken harshly against the pro Kannada activists who are struggling to secure Kannada interests. We will not allow the release of the film in Karnataka come what may," said Vatal Nagaraj yesterday.

Vatal Nagaraj addressed the press conference along with many leaders of pro Kannada organisations including the faction of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, which is spearheading the agitation to stall Kuselan's release in the state.

We will block 'Kuselan' release in Karnataka: Kannada activists

Activists here Wednesday vowed to block the release of the forthcoming Rajnikanth-starrer 'Kuselan' in Karnataka, saying the Tamil superstar should apologise for his 'anti-Kannadiga' statements.

The threat comes days after the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) had given its nod for the film's release in the state.

On Monday, Rajnikanth had written a letter to KFCC president and actress Jayamala to ensure that his film got a release in Karnataka Aug 1, along with its launch in Tamil Nadu. He had clarified that he had never intended to hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas.

Terming the superstar's letter just a publicity stunt, former legislators Vatal Nagaraj and Prabhakara Reddy at a press conference here asked Rajnikanth to come out with a public apology.

"We will not allow the release of the film in Karnataka, come what may," said Nagaraj, who addressed reporters along with many leaders of pro-Kannada organisations including a faction of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.

Some Kannada organisations had been demanding that "Kuselan" be released in the state only after a seven-week moratorium as Rajnikanth had allegedly hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas by supporting Tamil Nadu on a row over a drinking water project in Hogenekkal, on the border between the two states.

The superstar had joined the Tamil film fraternity in a daylong protest fast in April against Karnataka's objections to the Rs.13.3 billion Hogenekkal project that is expected to benefit about three million people in two Tamil Nadu districts.

Karnataka is opposed to the project, saying its share of the Cauvery river waters will be affected.

The actor, in his letter to Jayamala, had stressed that he had never intended to hurt the feelings of Kannadigas by speaking at the rally. He also added that he did not want his fans in Karantaka to miss out on his film.

Said Nagaraj: "This is not an apology letter. It is just an eye wash, an attempt by Rajnikanth to ensure his film gets released without any problems. The fact is that Rajnikanth, who was born and brought up in Karnataka, has acted against the interests of the state by stating that Tamil Nadu has the right to take up the Hogenakal project."

Added Narayana Gowda, president of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike: "We wanted an apology from Rajnikanth. He should call a media conference and announce that he regrets what he spoke at the rally in Chennai."

However, the KFCC is confident that "Kuselan" will be released as scheduled.

"The threat of protests was there even during the release of Rajnikanth's previous film 'Sivaji' and even Kamal Haasan's "Dasavathaaram'. But both films were released without any problems. We are sure that 'Kuselan' would also be released on Aug 1," said a KFCC official.

Kuselan Music Release

During the music release, the 100-odd technicians who worked for the film got Rs.4.5 million. This amount was pooled in by its hero; producer and director part of their fees and donated the amount to them during the movie's audio release here.

"In my endeavour to help the unsung heroes of the film industry - the technicians, I have networked with producer Vijay Kumar and director P. Vasu to donate Rs.1.5 million from their overflow and fees, respectively, and added a similar amount from my emoluments," superstar Rajnikanth announced Monday night.

His announcement was received with thunderous applause from the audience of technicians who were being recognised in such a fashion for the first time in the south Indian film industry.

According to the movie's publicists, Kuselan is an effort on Rajnikanth's part to help his mentor and director K. Balachander.

"When producers said I had to do it sans a big advance on a shoestring budget, I agreed because I liked its story," Rajnikanth said.

Balachander, who partly owns the film's rights, was overwhelmed by Rajnikant's efforts and said, "Though I cannot claim to be as great as Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, I can say with pride that Rajni is my Vivekananda."

The storyline is about a film star helping an old acquaintance. It also stars actresses Nayanthara and Meena. Director Vasu told reporters that though the movie depicts Rajnikanth in 20 different get-ups, including as an Egyptian Pharaoh. Asked the secret of his young looks in the promos, Rajnikanth modestly said, "I take the necessary dietary precautions, avoid excessive salt, sugar, milk and think positive."

The Tamil and Telugu versions of the film are expected to release later this month with over 450 prints in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, said a spokesman of its distributors Pyramid Saimira.
